Number 7 in the Tzolk'in (Dreamspell: "Resonant" Tone)
Number 7 sits in the middle of every thirteen-day run of the Tzolk'in, with six days before it and six after. It is written as one bar and two dots. The Classic Maya word was huk and the K'iche' word is wuqub'. The oldest securely dated Maya calendar record is a 7: a "7 Deer" painted at San Bartolo, Guatemala, around 300–200 BCE. Dreamspell calls 7 the "Resonant" tone, a modern label. [1][2][3][4][5]

How number 7 moves through the 260 days
The Tzolk'in pairs a running number from 1 to 13 with a running list of 20 day signs. Both advance by one each day, so a given pairing, such as 7 Manik', returns only after 260 days. [6][7] Number 7 therefore comes round every 13 days, each time with a different day sign: 20 times in each 260-day cycle. It is always the seventh day of a thirteen-day run. Spanish chroniclers called that run a trecena, "a group of thirteen", and Dreamspell calls it a "wavespell". [8] The day before a 7 is always a 6, and the day after is always an 8.
In the trecena that opened on 1 Imix, 10 October 2026, number 7 falls on 16 Oct 2026, the day 7 Manik' (Haab' 0 Sak'). [9] The next eight days carrying number 7:
| Date | Tzolk'in | Haab' |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Oct 2026 | 7 Manik' | 0 Sak' |
| 29 Oct 2026 | 7 Ajaw | 13 Sak' |
| 11 Nov 2026 | 7 Ben | 6 Keh |
| 24 Nov 2026 | 7 Kimi | 19 Keh |
| 7 Dec 2026 | 7 Kawak | 12 Mak |
| 20 Dec 2026 | 7 Eb | 5 K'ank'in |
| 2 Jan 2027 | 7 Chikchan | 18 K'ank'in |
| 15 Jan 2027 | 7 Etz'nab | 11 Muwan |
Today, 10 Oct 2026, is 1 Imix — trecena day 1. The next day numbered 7 is 16 Oct 2026, 7 Manik'.
How scribes wrote number 7
Seven is a bar plus two dots: "if two dots above the line, seven years", in the 18th-century description reprinted by Morley (1915: 91). [2] The oldest known example is on the San Bartolo fragment discussed below. There the excavators describe "the bar-and-dot number 7 above an animal head that clearly represents a deer", and they note that "the left dot of the number is missing". [4]
The head variant for 7 is rare. Morley knew it from one inscription only, the east side of Stela D at Quiriguá. Its mark is "the large ornamental scroll passing under the eye and curling up in front of the forehead", which is easier to see in the head for 17 (Morley 1915: 99–100). [2]
The oldest Maya calendar record: 7 Deer
In 2022 David Stuart, Heather Hurst, Boris Beltrán and William Saturno published painted plaster fragments from the Las Pinturas pyramid at San Bartolo, Guatemala. One fragment carries the date 7 Deer. Radiocarbon dating of the sealed deposit places it between 300 and 200 BCE, which makes it "the earliest securely dated example of the Maya calendar". [4]
In the colonial Yucatec system the day is 7 Manik'. In K'iche' it is Keej, "Deer". The authors note that Manik' itself is "of unknown origin and meaning". [4] They also list two later 7s from about 100–1 BCE: 7 Kimi on Kaminaljuyu Stela 10 and on Izapa Monument 40. [4]
Seven in K'iche' names
Sevens are everywhere in the Popol Vuh. The hero twins' father and uncle are One Hunahpu and Seven Hunahpu. Their opponents are the lords One Death and Seven Death, whose names, Christenson notes, "bear calendric dates" (Christenson 2007: 101). [3] The pattern continues into recorded history:
- Wuqub' No'j ("Seven Thoughts") ruled the K'iche' from about 1500 to 1523. Christenson notes that his name is a day of the 260-day calendar "and is likely the day on which this lord was born" (Christenson 2007: 275). [3]
- Wuqub' Aj ("Seven Reed/Cane") is listed among the lords as "a day in the traditional 260 day calendar" (Christenson 2007: 283). [3]
These names give us the K'iche' numeral wuqub'. They also show a practice, naming people after their birth day, that Christenson calls "a common practice at the time of the Conquest and into the Spanish Colonial period" (p. 246). [3]
In living practice
We have not found a published source that gives the number 7 on its own a fixed meaning in highland daykeeping. "Mystical attunement" and similar phrases come from the Dreamspell "Resonant" tone.
Dreamspell: the "Resonant" tone (a modern system)
This section describes the modern Dreamspell system (José & Lloydine Argüelles, from 1987; Dreamspell kit 1990), not the traditional Maya count. [10]
In Dreamspell, tone 7 is called "Resonant". The Foundation for the Law of Time lists its essence as attunement, its power as channel and its action as inspire. [5] These are Dreamspell teachings. They are not translations of a Maya word, and we have not found them in Classic, colonial or ethnographic sources.
Dreamspell also counts days differently. It fixes 26 July 1987 as Kin 34 and does not count 29 February. [11][10] So a Dreamspell tone 7 day is usually not a traditional number 7 day. For example, 16 Oct 2026 is 7 Manik' in the traditional count but Kin 51, "Blue Crystal Monkey" in Dreamspell. Our reports show the Dreamspell name as a labelled alias next to the traditional number. Questions about number 7
Is "galactic tone" a Maya term?
No. "Galactic tone", and "Resonant" as the name for 7, come from the modern Dreamspell system (from 1987). [10][12] Maya sources speak of the days' numbers. The English word trecena comes from Spanish chroniclers. [8]
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Most likely it uses Dreamspell, which anchors its count to 26 July 1987 and skips 29 February. The traditional count runs without a break and matches the dates published by Guatemala's Ministry of Culture. [11][13] A few calculators also use the 584285 or 584286 correlation, which moves results by two or three days. [14]
Is 7 a good or bad number?
We have not found a traditional source that ranks the thirteen numbers, and we do not rank them.
Why is 7 called the middle number?
There are thirteen numbers, and 7 has six before it and six after it. That is arithmetic. Any further symbolism you read online is modern unless it cites a source.
Is "Resonant" a Maya word?
No. It is the name José and Lloydine Argüelles gave to tone 7 in Dreamspell. [5][10]
