Number 6 in the Tzolk'in (Dreamspell: "Rhythmic" Tone)
Number 6 is the sixth day of every thirteen-day run in the Tzolk'in. It is written as one bar and one dot, or as a head with a "hatchet eye". The Classic Maya word was wak. Two of the oldest firmly dated Long Count records in Mesoamerica carry a 6 as their day number: 6 Reed at Chiapa de Corzo and 6 Knife on Stela C at Tres Zapotes, both from the 1st century BCE. Dreamspell calls 6 the "Rhythmic" tone, a modern label. [1][2][3][4]

How number 6 moves through the 260 days
The Tzolk'in pairs a running number from 1 to 13 with a running list of 20 day signs. Both advance by one each day, so a given pairing, such as 6 Kimi, returns only after 260 days. [5][6] Number 6 therefore comes round every 13 days, each time with a different day sign: 20 times in each 260-day cycle. It is always the sixth day of a thirteen-day run. Spanish chroniclers called that run a trecena, "a group of thirteen", and Dreamspell calls it a "wavespell". [7] The day before a 6 is always a 5, and the day after is always a 7.
In the trecena that opened on 1 Imix, 10 October 2026, number 6 falls on 15 Oct 2026, the day 6 Kimi (Haab' 19 Yax). [8] The next eight days carrying number 6:
| Date | Tzolk'in | Haab' |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Oct 2026 | 6 Kimi | 19 Yax |
| 28 Oct 2026 | 6 Kawak | 12 Sak' |
| 10 Nov 2026 | 6 Eb | 5 Keh |
| 23 Nov 2026 | 6 Chikchan | 18 Keh |
| 6 Dec 2026 | 6 Etz'nab | 11 Mak |
| 19 Dec 2026 | 6 Chuwen | 4 K'ank'in |
| 1 Jan 2027 | 6 K'an | 17 K'ank'in |
| 14 Jan 2027 | 6 Kaban | 10 Muwan |
Today, 10 Oct 2026, is 1 Imix — trecena day 1. The next day numbered 6 is 15 Oct 2026, 6 Kimi.
How scribes wrote number 6
Six is a bar (5) plus a dot (1). The 18th-century description reprinted by Morley reads: "if one line and above it one dot, six years" (Morley 1915: 91). [2] Because a single dot beside a bar leaves a gap in a square glyph block, carvers often added non-numerical fillers. On a weathered stone those fillers can be mistaken for extra dots, which is why Morley listed 6, 7 and 8 among the numbers most often misread (Morley 1915: 90–91). [2]
The head for 6 is easy to recognise. It is "always characterized by the so-called hatchet eye", and the same eye appears in the head for 16 (Morley 1915: 99). [2]
Number 6 in the oldest Long Count dates
The Long Count gives each day an exact place in a running count. A Tzolk'in day such as "6 Reed" repeats every 260 days, but a Long Count date pins it down. Stuart, Hurst, Beltrán and Saturno summarise the earliest records:
- Chiapa de Corzo, Mexico. A fragment with the Long Count 7.16.3.2.13 and the day 6 Reed (Ben) 16 Xul. They call it "the earliest firmly identified Long Count date in Mesoamerica" and date it to about 36 BCE. It is written in Isthmian (Epi-Olmec) script, not Maya writing. [3]
- Tres Zapotes, Stela C. 7.16.6.16.18, 6 Knife (Etz'nab) 1 Wo, about 3 September 32 BCE, also Isthmian. [3]
That two of the earliest anchored dates fall on a 6 is a coincidence of survival. It does not mean 6 was special. It is a good reminder that every Tzolk'in number shows up in the historical record.
Today is a "Rhythmic" day in Dreamspell
The date this page was reviewed shows clearly that the two systems differ. On 10 October 2026 the traditional count used here gives 1 Imix. [8] The Dreamspell count gives Kin 45, "Red Rhythmic Serpent", so the same day is a 6 in Dreamspell and a 1 in the traditional count. Neither is a calculation error; they are different counts (see the comparison page). [9]
In living practice
We have not found a published source that gives the number 6 on its own a fixed meaning in highland daykeeping. "Equality", "organize" and "balance" are Dreamspell keywords for this number.
Dreamspell: the "Rhythmic" tone (a modern system)
This section describes the modern Dreamspell system (José & Lloydine Argüelles, from 1987; Dreamspell kit 1990), not the traditional Maya count. [10]
In Dreamspell, tone 6 is called "Rhythmic". The Foundation for the Law of Time lists its essence as equality, its power as organize and its action as balance. [4] These are Dreamspell teachings. They are not translations of a Maya word, and we have not found them in Classic, colonial or ethnographic sources.
Dreamspell also counts days differently. It fixes 26 July 1987 as Kin 34 and does not count 29 February. [9][10] So a Dreamspell tone 6 day is usually not a traditional number 6 day. For example, 15 Oct 2026 is 6 Kimi in the traditional count but Kin 50, "White Spectral Dog" in Dreamspell. Our reports show the Dreamspell name as a labelled alias next to the traditional number. Questions about number 6
Is "galactic tone" a Maya term?
No. "Galactic tone", and "Rhythmic" as the name for 6, come from the modern Dreamspell system (from 1987). [10][11] Maya sources speak of the days' numbers. The English word trecena comes from Spanish chroniclers. [7]
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Most likely it uses Dreamspell, which anchors its count to 26 July 1987 and skips 29 February. The traditional count runs without a break and matches the dates published by Guatemala's Ministry of Culture. [9][12] A few calculators also use the 584285 or 584286 correlation, which moves results by two or three days. [13]
Is 6 a good or bad number?
We have not found a traditional source that ranks the thirteen numbers, and we do not rank them.
Why does a Dreamspell site say today is a 6 when you say 1?
Dreamspell uses its own anchor (26 July 1987 = Kin 34) and skips 29 February, so its numbers usually differ from the traditional count. On 10 October 2026 the gap is five numbers. [9][10]
Is 6 a number of balance?
Only in Dreamspell, where "Rhythmic" carries the keywords equality, organize and balance. [4]
