Number 3 in the Tzolk'in (Dreamspell: "Electric" Tone)
Number 3 is the third day of every thirteen-day run in the Tzolk'in. It is written with three dots, or in carved texts with a head wearing a headband. The Classic Maya word was ux or ox, and the K'iche' word oxib' appears in the name of the lord Oxib' Kiej, "Three Deer". A "3 Ik'" painted at San Bartolo around 100 BCE is among the earliest Maya calendar records. Dreamspell calls it the "Electric" tone. [1][2][3][4][5]

How number 3 moves through the 260 days
The Tzolk'in pairs a running number from 1 to 13 with a running list of 20 day signs. Both advance by one each day, so a given pairing, such as 3 Ak'bal, returns only after 260 days. [6][7] Number 3 therefore comes round every 13 days, each time with a different day sign: 20 times in each 260-day cycle. It is always the third day of a thirteen-day run. Spanish chroniclers called that run a trecena, "a group of thirteen", and Dreamspell calls it a "wavespell". [8] The day before a 3 is always a 2, and the day after is always a 4.
In the trecena that opened on 1 Imix, 10 October 2026, number 3 falls on 12 Oct 2026, the day 3 Ak'bal (Haab' 16 Yax). [9] The next eight days carrying number 3:
| Date | Tzolk'in | Haab' |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Oct 2026 | 3 Ak'bal | 16 Yax |
| 25 Oct 2026 | 3 Kib | 9 Sak' |
| 7 Nov 2026 | 3 Muluk | 2 Keh |
| 20 Nov 2026 | 3 Ik' | 15 Keh |
| 3 Dec 2026 | 3 Men | 8 Mak |
| 16 Dec 2026 | 3 Lamat | 1 K'ank'in |
| 29 Dec 2026 | 3 Imix | 14 K'ank'in |
| 11 Jan 2027 | 3 Ix | 7 Muwan |
Today, 10 Oct 2026, is 1 Imix — trecena day 1. The next day numbered 3 is 12 Oct 2026, 3 Ak'bal.
How scribes wrote number 3
Three is three dots. [2] On weathered monuments it is easy to misread. Ornamental fillers placed beside one or two dots can look like real dots, so Morley warned that 1, 2 and 3 are "frequently mistaken for one another". He called misread numerals a leading cause of errors in reading inscriptions (Morley 1915: 90–91). [2]
As a portrait head, 3 is identified by "the fillet, or headdress" (Morley 1915: 98). [2] The same head turns up inside the number 13. One of the two ways scribes wrote 13 was the head for 3 combined with the fleshless lower jaw of the head for 10, so 10 + 3. Morley knew only two examples of that composite form, on the Temple of the Cross at Palenque and on the Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copan (Morley 1915: 101). [2]
Number 3 in early calendar records
The Maya 260-day calendar is old, and 3 shows up near the start of its written history. Stuart, Hurst, Beltrán and Saturno list a "3 Ik'" (3 Wind) painted in the San Bartolo murals around 100 BCE. [4] They point out that 3 Wind is a Year Bearer date. A year could be named by a number from 1 to 13 combined with one of four Year Bearer days, and "each individual example" repeats every 52 years. [4]
The same paper discusses a claim for something much older. A ceramic seal from San Andrés, Tabasco, dated to about 650 BCE, was read by its excavators as a day "3 Ajaw". Stuart and colleagues do not accept that identification. They argue that the design could equally be an image rather than writing. [4] On current evidence it is a disputed reading, not the oldest "3".
Number 3 in K'iche' names
The Popol Vuh and related chronicles name several lords after days of the 260-day calendar. One of them is Oxib' Kiej, "Three Deer". Christenson's note on the name calls it "a day on the traditional 260 day calendar". It adds that the lord Wuqub' No'j died shortly before the Spanish invasion of Guatemala in 1524, "leaving Oxib Quiej to face the foreign threat" (Christenson 2007: 276). [3] The name gives us the K'iche' word for three, oxib', attached to the day Kiej (Deer, Yucatec Manik').
In living practice
We have not found a published source that gives the number 3 on its own a fixed meaning in highland daykeeping. The keywords often attached to it online (service, activation, bonding) come from the Dreamspell "Electric" tone.
Dreamspell: the "Electric" tone (a modern system)
This section describes the modern Dreamspell system (José & Lloydine Argüelles, from 1987; Dreamspell kit 1990), not the traditional Maya count. [10]
In Dreamspell, tone 3 is called "Electric". The Foundation for the Law of Time lists its essence as service, its power as activate and its action as bond. [5] These are Dreamspell teachings. They are not translations of a Maya word, and we have not found them in Classic, colonial or ethnographic sources.
Dreamspell also counts days differently. It fixes 26 July 1987 as Kin 34 and does not count 29 February. [11][10] So a Dreamspell tone 3 day is usually not a traditional number 3 day. For example, 12 Oct 2026 is 3 Ak'bal in the traditional count but Kin 47, "Blue Galactic Hand" in Dreamspell. Our reports show the Dreamspell name as a labelled alias next to the traditional number. Questions about number 3
Is "galactic tone" a Maya term?
No. "Galactic tone", and "Electric" as the name for 3, come from the modern Dreamspell system (from 1987). [10][12] Maya sources speak of the days' numbers. The English word trecena comes from Spanish chroniclers. [8]
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Most likely it uses Dreamspell, which anchors its count to 26 July 1987 and skips 29 February. The traditional count runs without a break and matches the dates published by Guatemala's Ministry of Culture. [11][13] A few calculators also use the 584285 or 584286 correlation, which moves results by two or three days. [14]
Is 3 a good or bad number?
We have not found a traditional source that ranks the thirteen numbers, and we do not rank them.
What is a Year Bearer?
It is one of four day names that could begin the 365-day year. Combined with a number from 1 to 13, it names a year, and each combination repeats every 52 years. The San Bartolo "3 Ik'" may be an early example. [4]
Is 3 a lucky number in the Maya calendar?
We have not found a traditional source that ranks individual numbers as lucky or unlucky. The Dreamspell "Electric" keywords are modern. [5]
