Number 12 in the Tzolk'in (Dreamspell: "Crystal" Tone)

Number 12 is the twelfth day of every thirteen-day run in the Tzolk'in. It is written as two bars and two dots. It is also the least documented of the thirteen numbers. Kettunen and Helmke give its Classic word only tentatively (lajunchan?), and Morley listed the key feature of its head numeral as "undetermined". Dreamspell calls 12 the "Crystal" tone, and 21 December 2012 was "Blue Crystal Hand" in Dreamspell while the traditional count gives 4 Ajaw. [1][2][3][4]

How number 12 moves through the 260 days

The Tzolk'in pairs a running number from 1 to 13 with a running list of 20 day signs. Both advance by one each day, so a given pairing, such as 12 Eb, returns only after 260 days. [4][5] Number 12 therefore comes round every 13 days, each time with a different day sign: 20 times in each 260-day cycle. It is always the twelfth day of a thirteen-day run. Spanish chroniclers called that run a trecena, "a group of thirteen", and Dreamspell calls it a "wavespell". [6] The day before a 12 is always an 11, and the day after is always a 13.

In the trecena that opened on 1 Imix, 10 October 2026, number 12 falls on 21 Oct 2026, the day 12 Eb (Haab' 5 Sak'). [7] The next eight days carrying number 12:

Date Tzolk'in Haab'
21 Oct 2026 12 Eb 5 Sak'
3 Nov 2026 12 Chikchan 18 Sak'
16 Nov 2026 12 Etz'nab 11 Keh
29 Nov 2026 12 Chuwen 4 Mak
12 Dec 2026 12 K'an 17 Mak
25 Dec 2026 12 Kaban 10 K'ank'in
7 Jan 2027 12 Ok 3 Muwan
20 Jan 2027 12 Ak'bal 16 Muwan

Today, 10 Oct 2026, is 1 Imix — trecena day 1. The next day numbered 12 is 21 Oct 2026, 12 Eb.

How scribes wrote number 12

Twelve is two bars and two dots: "a dot above two lines, eleven; if two dots, twelve" (Morley 1915: 91). [2] With dots that may be padded by fillers, 12 is easy to confuse with 11 or 13 on a worn monument (Morley 1915: 90–91). [2]

A head numeral nobody has pinned down

Morley illustrated three examples of the head for 12 and noted that "all three of the faces are of the same type, even though their essential characteristic has not yet been determined." Like the head for 11, it has no fleshless lower jaw, so it was not built as 10 + 2 (Morley 1915: 100). [2] His summary table lists it as "Undetermined; type of head known, however" (Morley 1915: 103). [2] We have not found a later study that identifies it as firmly as Stuart did for 11. If you know of one, please tell us through the contact page.

The Classic Maya word is uncertain too. Kettunen and Helmke list lajunchan?, question mark included. [1]

What we can't tell you about 12

Pages about "galactic tone 12" usually offer a confident personality. We do not, for three reasons:

  1. We have not found a Classic, colonial or ethnographic source that gives 12 a meaning of its own.
  2. The descriptions you find online (cooperation, dedication, universalising) are the Dreamspell keywords for "Crystal". [3]
  3. Even the way 12 was written as a head is not fully understood.

Our reports treat the number as a prompt for reflection and say so. That is the honest position for 12.

K'atun 12 Ajaw

Colonial Yucatec chronicles named 7,200-day k'atuns after their ending day, always an Ajaw. In the sequence the numbers fall by two each time, and 12 Ajaw comes right after 1 Ajaw (Morley 1915: 80–81). [5] By the GMT 584283 count the most recent k'atun ending on 12 Ajaw was on 14 February 1934. The next will not come until 22 May 2190 (our calculation). [7]

Why 21 December 2012 is a "Crystal" day in Dreamspell

In the traditional count, 21 December 2012 is 4 Ajaw 3 K'ank'in, the day the Long Count completed 13 bak'tuns. [4] In Dreamspell the same date is Kin 207, "Blue Crystal Hand", which is tone 12. [8][9] Both are internally correct. They come from different counts, which is why a "12" in one system is a "4" in the other.

In living practice

We have not found a published source that gives the number 12 on its own a fixed meaning in highland daykeeping.

Dreamspell: the "Crystal" tone (a modern system)

This section describes the modern Dreamspell system (José & Lloydine Argüelles, from 1987; Dreamspell kit 1990), not the traditional Maya count. [8]

In Dreamspell, tone 12 is called "Crystal". The Foundation for the Law of Time lists its essence as cooperation, its power as dedicate and its action as universalize. [3] These are Dreamspell teachings. They are not translations of a Maya word, and we have not found them in Classic, colonial or ethnographic sources.

Dreamspell also counts days differently. It fixes 26 July 1987 as Kin 34 and does not count 29 February. [9][8] So a Dreamspell tone 12 day is usually not a traditional number 12 day. For example, 21 Oct 2026 is 12 Eb in the traditional count but Kin 56, "Yellow Self-Existing Warrior" in Dreamspell. Our reports show the Dreamspell name as a labelled alias next to the traditional number. Is "Crystal" a Maya term? How the two counts differ →

Questions about number 12

Is "galactic tone" a Maya term?
No. "Galactic tone", and "Crystal" as the name for 12, come from the modern Dreamspell system (from 1987). [8][10] Maya sources speak of the days' numbers. The English word trecena comes from Spanish chroniclers. [6]

Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Most likely it uses Dreamspell, which anchors its count to 26 July 1987 and skips 29 February. The traditional count runs without a break and matches the dates published by Guatemala's Ministry of Culture. [9][11] A few calculators also use the 584285 or 584286 correlation, which moves results by two or three days. [12]

Is 12 a good or bad number?
We have not found a traditional source that ranks the thirteen numbers, and we do not rank them.

Why is this page shorter on history than the others?
Because the sources are thinner. We would rather say so than fill the page with unsourced meanings.

Was 21 December 2012 a 12?
Only in Dreamspell (Kin 207, Blue Crystal Hand). In the traditional count it was 4 Ajaw. [4]
